MODIFICATIONS, ACCOMMODATIONS, & ADAPTATIONS for English Learners
.

What is the difference between accommodations, adaptations, and modifications?

Accommodation: An umbrella term for describing any of the supports and services a student receives in order to be successful in a general education environment. This might include materials, people, equipment, locations, etc.

Adaptations: Instructional tools that enable a student with special needs (such as limited English proficiency) to more readily access curricular content or to more easily demonstrate understanding of that content.

Modifications: Significant changes are made to the curriculum that enable a student to be

successful in a general education environment. The expectation of a task is changed.

* Modifications pertain to changing curricular objectives; the concept is not essential for

considering accommodations made in students' daily work.
