Fractured Fairy Tales - STUDENT INTERADTIVE ... Read, Write, Think
Whether it's The Princess and the Rutabaga or Big Blue Riding Hood, invite your students to turn familiar fairy tales upside down and inside out—and to have fun. This interactive tool gives students a choice of three fairy tales to read. They are then guided to choose a variety of changes, which they use to compose a fractured fairy tale to print off and illustrate. Useful for teaching point of view, setting, plot, as well as fairy tale conventions such as they lived happily ever after, this tool encourages students to use their imaginations and the writing process at the same time.
A Recipe for Writing -- "Fairy Tale Feasts" (Grades 2-4) ... Read, Write, Think
In this lesson, students use the book Fairy Tale Feasts to examine recipes written based on their favorite fairy tales. Students then decide on a story, book, or fairy tale for which they would like to find their own recipe. A student-created recipe book showcases the students' findings and the class' favorite stories.
In this lesson, students are able to showcase their life experiences with food and recipes. By bringing their background knowledge of family and other recipes to the table, they are able to make the connection between different foods and their favorite stories, books, or fairy tales, thus linking everyday life experiences to literacy within the school walls.
Cowboys & Castles -- Interacting with Fractured Texas Tales ... Read, Write, Think
....OVERVIEW....Interacting with and responding to texts is an important foundation to build in the primary grades and is a great way to encourage the language development of English-language learners (ELLs). Invite students to explore five different ways to respond to text as they listen to two traditional fairy tales and their Wild West versions. Students engage with the text by talking back to characters in Cinderella, dramatizing events in Bubba the Cowboy Prince, inserting themselves into the story of Little Red Riding Hood, and critiquing and controlling story elements in Little Red Cowboy Hat. After comparing and contrasting Little Red Riding Hood and Little Red Cowboy Hat, students plan and create an original fractured tale.
